Yesterday, today and tomorrow: Kock relies on Vollmer for the long term 2025-12-01

to overview

Based in northern Germany, Kock GmbH supports the timber industry with its sawmill technology and serves the metal, plastics and paper industries with its machining technology. In addition to tool sharpening and sales, the company also manufactures special tools – for which it has recently invested in two new Vollmer VGrind grinding machines. Kock also operates around two dozen other Vollmer machines used for grinding circular saws as well as maintaining and producing band saws.

Just a few kilometres northwest of Hamburg, close to the River Elbe, lies the village of Moorrege with around 5,000 inhabitants – the ideal location for Kock GmbH. From here, the company can serve local customers on a daily basis, while its sawmill business even covers the entire DACH region.

Kock – sharpening service and tool manufacturer in one

“With our highly qualified team of around 45 employees and a modern machine park, we support our customers in all matters relating to machining and cutting tools,” says Hannes Kock, Managing Director of Kock GmbH. “That’s why we combine sharpening services, tool manufacturing and the distribution of leading brands into a complete package tailored to the wood and metal processing industries.”

Kock specialises in high-quality tools and accessories for machining. Its portfolio includes various types of tools such as milling cutters, drills, step drills, circular saw blades, block band saws, industrial knives, cutting rotors and woodworking tools. The company’s customers come from the metal, wood, paper and plastics industries, working in sectors such as vessel construction, aerospace, energy, medicine, mechanical engineering and automotive manufacturing. Within its sales portfolio, Kock offers well-known tools from leading manufacturers – such as Iscar and Wohlhaupter for the metal industry, and Aigner and Kanefusa for wood processing.

Kock operates more than two dozen Vollmer machines

Founded in the 1950s by Heinrich Kock, the company is now run in its third generation by his grandson, Hannes Kock. It was previously managed by Hannes’ father Dieter and his uncle Wolfgang. Since 2017, Kock has had a sales partnership with the AGEFA Group for northern Germany. Another pillar of the company’s operations is the integration and management of tool management systems, offering solutions that range from dispensing systems to fully integrated procurement systems for tools.

A look inside the production hall in Moorrege reveals around 25 machines from Vollmer, the sharpening specialist from Biberach. Kock has relied on Vollmer technology since its foundation – and still operates machines that were delivered more than 70 years ago from southern Germany to the marshlands along the Elbe.

“One of our first Vollmer machines was the Cana/E for sharpening circular saw blades. In addition, we use Vollmer tensioning, stellite-tipping and grinding machines for the maintenance and manufacture of band saws,” says Hannes Kock. “Recently, we added the VGrind argon and VGrind 360 grinding machines, which enable us to sharpen and manufacture solid carbide tools such as drills and milling cutters – including custom-designed special tools.”

Focus on small-diameter special tools

On both VGrind machines, Kock can machine various shank tools in a single clamping operation – and thanks to Vollmer’s HC 4 automation, this can be done unattended and around the clock. The HC 4 chain magazine can hold either 39 HSK-A63 tools or up to 158 shank tools. Featuring linear drives on the X, Y and Z axes and two vertically arranged spindles, the grinding machines deliver ultra-precise multi-level machining. Each spindle can be equipped with different grinding wheel sets. With these new VGrind machines, Kock aims to expand its production of small-batch special tools, particularly focusing on machining tools with smaller diameters.

Circular and band saw processing for the wood industry

“Wood is part of our daily lives and a very likeable raw material, which is why we support our customers in processing it with great passion,” says Hannes Kock. “We machine circular and band saws using several Vollmer machines – from tensioning benches and straightening centres to tipping and grinding machines.”

Among others, Kock operates a Vollmer CHD 270 grinding machine with eight CNC-controlled axes and integrated measuring devices. It is suitable for the automatic machining of carbide-tipped circular saw blades with diameters ranging from 80 to 840 millimetres and for various tooth geometries on both rake and clearance faces. Equipped with an ND robot system, the CHD 270 runs unmanned in 24/7 operation.

Within its sawmill technology division, Kock offers sharpening services and band saw production for the entire DACH region. The company manufactures cut-off and block band saw blades using its proprietary “Kock Double Cut” tooth design and its own HK51 band steel. Thanks to its outstanding flatness, superior surface finish, high tensile strength and flexibility, this band steel ensures extremely long operating times for band saws.

“Kock has evolved over the past 70 years into an innovative and reliable partner to the wood and metal industries – and Vollmer technology has been instrumental in that journey,” says Ralf Großhauser, Managing Director of the Vollmer Group. “The company’s recent investments in Vollmer machines demonstrate that Kock will continue to use our technologies to develop new business areas such as the production of special tools.”
